May Film Theatre News

Apr 2011

We start with breaking news from Pantoland! In one frantic script-writing session, Jack has swapped Daisy the cow for a bag of magic beans - unaware that Dame Trott will be most upset when he returns to the quiet village of little-pimple-on-the-bottom to break the news. What will happen next? The truth is, I won't know until we meet up again next week to start work on page 16! If you hadn't already guessed, I am, of course, referring to the next traditional Bright Sparks family pantomime - Jack and the Beanstalk, which doesn't appear on our stage until January 2012, but is already selling a good number of tickets, which remain discounted for a limited time.

May conjures up a terrific mix of films for everyone, including the eagerly awaited return of Johnny Depp as Captain Jack. Read on to find out what's showing at Suffolk's newest 3D cinema.

The effects-laden 3D spectacle Thor (12A) tells of the powerful but arrogant namesake warrior, who is cast out of the fantastic realm of Asgard and sent to live amongst humans on Earth, where, surrounded by mystery, he faces the challenge of becoming one of their finest defenders, when the human race comes under attack. Breathtaking special effects make this a film not to be missed.

Arthur (12A) sees Russell Brand reinventing the role of loveable billionaire Arthur Bach, a drunken playboy rascal, who stands to lose a wealthy inheritance when he falls for a working class woman that his family doesn't approve of. With his vast fortune in the balance, he turns to his valet for help when his family makes him choose between money and love.

Our BIG film for May, which is showing at the Film Theatre from the UK release date of Wednesday 18th May and throughout the May half term holidays is Pirates of the Caribbean 4: On Stranger Tides (12A). Everyone's favourite Captain is back - shot in spectacular 3D and in this latest offering, Jack Sparrow crosses paths with a woman from his past and he's not sure if it's love, or if she's a ruthless con artist who's using him to find the fabled Fountain of Youth. When she forces him aboard the Queen Anne's Revenge, the ship of the formidable pirate Blackbeard, Jack finds himself on an unexpected adventure in which he doesn't know who to fear more: Blackbeard or the woman from his past.

Films during the May half-term school holidays also include Disneys' Winnie the Pooh (U), and sees A.A. Milne's beloved characters return to the big screen in the continuing adventures of Pooh Bear, Eeyore, Tigger and the rest of the adorable friends of Hundred Acre Wood.

I am especially looking forward to seeing Rio 3D (U), a  fantastic, feel-good 3D family treat, in which a domesticated macaw leaves the security of his cage in Minnesota and travels to Rio de Janeiro, where he encounters Jewel, a female macaw, who takes him on an adventure of a lifetime, where they discover friendship, love and courage.

May comes to a close with Robert Pattinson and Reese Witherspoon starring in the romantic drama Water for Elephants (12A)  A veterinary student abandons his studies after the death of his parents and joins a travelling circus as their vet, where he meets and falls in love with a star performer in a circus of a bygone era. Set against the world of the Big Top, their relationship overcomes all odds - including the wrath of her charismatic but dangerous husband.
