February Film Theatre News

Jan 2011

Well I never! It seems that the Bright Sparks panto was another massive success for Leiston's highly polished 'am-dram' players. We all had a hoot, as did the audiences, plus a standing ovation on Friday performance - a first for panto at the Film Theatre! Huge thanks to the 1000+ panto-goers who laughed and shouted all the way to Treasure Island!

The month of February promises one thing at the Film Theatre ... queues!

We have two big films for February, including the highly acclaimed and BAFTA nominated British film The Kings Speech (12A), starring Golden Globe winner Colin Firth and based on the true story of King George VI of Britain and his impromptu ascension to the throne, after the abdication of his brother. Plagued by a dreaded stutter and considered unfit to be king, he engages the help of an unorthodox speech therapist, who through a set of unexpected techniques is able to find his voice and boldly lead the country through war. Whatever you do, don't miss this outstanding film, which is on screen from 4th February until 17th February.

The other film to look out for is Walt Disney's shiny new 3D adventure Tangled 3D (U). The long-haired Princess Rapunzel has spent her entire life kidnapped and held in a tower, but when she falls in love with a passing bandit, she must venture into the outside world for the first time to find him. The perfect 3D family treat for the half term school holidays and on screen from 18th February.

Sanctum 3D (12A) comes from James Cameron (Avatar and Titanic) and is only available in 3D - good job we've got it! The film follows a team of underwater cave divers on a treacherous expedition to the largest, most beautiful and least accessible cave system on Earth. When a tropical storm forces them deep into the caverns, they must fight raging water, deadly terrain and creeping panic as they search for an unknown escape route to the sea. Showing from Friday 18th February.

Following the popularity of last year's competition, a host of the counties hopefuls will be taking to our stage on Sunday 27th February, in Suffolk's Got More Talent, to compete for the cash prize, plus a gold spot, performing in a national talent showcase. Over 100 acts have been auditioned, with ages ranging from 5 to 76 years and from those auditions, a handful of lucky contestants will be doing their best to impress the judges and walk away as the overall winner. Tickets are now available from the Film Theatre box office, or by clicking here.

Our final film for February is the wonderful Black Sawn (15), starring Natalie Portman as a gifted ballerina, who lands a dream role in Swan Lake, but faces competition from an impressive new dancer. As the two young dancers expand their rivalry into a twisted friendship, she begins to get more in touch with her dark side and a recklessness that threatens to destroy her. Showing from Friday 25th February.

And finally, everyone at Leiston Film Theatre sends special congratulations to Hannah and Mark on the safe arrival of baby Alex on 18th January. He is a little gem!
