The Kings Speech gets cinema-goers talking

Jan 2011

Staff at Leiston Film Theatre are bracing themselves for a busy time ahead, when the Golden Globe winning Colin Firth stars in the British box office smash The Kings Speech (12A) from Friday 4th February.

With 14 BAFTA nominations, and anticipated Oscar glory ahead, the true life story has been sold out for weeks in big city cinemas, with many cinema-goers eagerly awaiting the arrival of the critically acclaimed film at their local cinema.

The film is based on the true story of King George VI and his impromptu ascension to the throne, after the abdication of his brother. Plagued by a dreaded stutter and considered unfit to be King, he engages the help of an unorthodox speech therapist, who through a set of unexpected techniques is able to find his voice and boldly lead the country through war.

Firth's performance as King George VI is quite magnificent and paired with Geoffrey Rush, as the unauthdox speech therapist, they bicker and grumble to each other, developing a most unusual relationship. Equally perfect is Helena Bonham Carter as the warm-hearted Elizabeth, later, of course, to become the Queen Mother.

Leiston Film Theatre manager Wayne Burns is certain of a busy couple of weeks ahead. "Since the film's release, we have been inundated with enquiries on when we are screening the film. Firth's award success has got the public talking and we have planned to screen the film prior to and over the BAFTA weekend on 13th February to capture all the excitement surrounding it's multi award prospects. I would urge customers to book in advance." he said.

Directed by Tom Hooper, the film also features Timothy Spall as Winston Churchill, Guy Pearce as Edward VIII and Michael Gambon as King George V. With Colin Firth already named as the favourite to win Best Actor at this year's Oscars and Helen Mirren landing the Oscar for Best Actress for her role in The Queen three years previously, it seems more success for the British film that everyone is talking about is just around the corner.

The Kings Speech (12A) is showing at Leiston Film Theatre from Friday 4th February until Thursday 17th February. Seats may be booked in advance on 01728 830549, or by clicking here.
