Leiston Film Theatre Support Club Chairman,

Lesley Hill, was recently awarded with a special cup, in recognition of her outstanding contribution as the leader of the fund raising organisation, since she took office in 2008.

Leiston Film Theatre was first established in 1992, to assist Suffolk’s oldest cinema in what was then, uncertain times for the Council owned venue. Through an annual programme of fund raising events, the Support Club has continued to encourage the use and development of the Leiston Film Theatre and as the club approaches its 22nd anniversary, the hard working committee can now boast of raising in excess of £150,000 to keep Leiston’s cinema open.

Leiston Film Theatre manager Wayne Burns was thrilled to learn that Lesley Hill was to be the recipient of the award from the Leiston-cum-Sizewell Town Council Chairman, Cllr. Ann Nunn. “Lesley is a wonderful figurehead for the Support Club. Her dedication to our venue is admirable and her sheer determination alongside her hard working committee has played a significant part in the Film Theatre success in recent years.” he said.

In 2010, the Support Club enabled the venue to be installed with the very latest in digital and 3D projection, with an initial donation of £11,000 and a subsequent pledge to meet the repayments to cover the outstanding balance on a £39,000 loan, which they have achieved, thanks to the continuing generosity of the club’s 234 members.

On receiving her award, Lesley said “I am delighted to receive the Chairman’s Cup and accept this on behalf of the Leiston Film Theatre Support Club. I see this as recognition of the commitment and hard work of the committee and of the continued support shown by club members with our fundraising.”

In 2014, Leiston Film Theatre celebrates its magnificent centenary, with an ambitious programme of 100 special events and promotions to commemorate its 100th anniversary. These celebrations will include a unique club event on Wednesday 19th November, when the story of Suffolk’s oldest cinema will be told, via archive images and footage that capture the fascinating tale of one of Leiston’s cinema. Tickets for this event will be available from Friday 1st August, with a generous discount for Support Club members.

Leiston Film Theatre Support Club continues to raise funds and new members are always welcome to become part of quite a unique group of supporters. Club membership forms are available from the Leiston Film Theatre Support Club, or by contacting Leiston Film Theatre on 01728 830549.
