March Film Theatre News

Mar 2014

There are times when there simply isn't enough room to tell you about all the great films and live shows that are coming to Leiston Film Theatre in the coming weeks and months, so please do keep an eye out on our On Screen and On Stage pages.

March promises a packed programme of films, some on release and one or two making their final appearances by popular demand, including the BAFTA and OSCARS winning Gravity (12A) (9th and 12th March), 12 Years a Slave (15) (10th-13th March) and Philomena (12A) (21st and 22nd March), to name only a few.

The Wolf of Wall Street (18) plays for 3 days only from Friday 7th March and stars Leonardo DiCaprio and lifts the lid on massive 1990's securities fraud scandal, which was orchestrated by hard-partying stockbroker who enjoyed fast cars, luxury yachts and endless reserves of money, earned by ruthlessly swindling investors. But his high-flying lifestyle wouldn't last forever, as FBI agents uncover his dodgy dealings and the dynamic banker looks set to face federal prison.

Our centenary celebrations continue in March with two special events, which I'm really looking forward to. The first is a unique tribute to the early days of Leiston Picture House, as we present a special presentation of the 1921 Charlie Chaplin silent classic The Kid (U) on Sunday 16th March at 3.00pm, featuring live musical accompaniment by Suffolk Organist Tom Horton. All tickets are only 1.00 (100 pennies for a 100 years) and are now available from our box office. As are tickets for the one-off screening of the fascinating documentary The Last Projectionist (12A) on Sunday 23rd March at 3.00pm. When the UK's oldest working cinema opened in 1909, it took five years to train a projectionist - a century later; it takes less than an hour. This wonderful film charts the amazing history of UK independent cinemas, taking a tour of some of the most magical picture houses in the country. The screening will be followed by an informal questions and answers session with Neville Parry from Aldeburgh Cinema, who is believed to be the UK's oldest serving projectionist.

The Monuments Men (12A) stars George Clooney, Matt Damon and Bill Murray and is based on the true story of the greatest treasure hunt in history. An unlikely World War II platoon of museum directors, curators and art historians are tasked with going into Germany to rescue artistic masterpieces from the Nazi thieves and returning them to their rightful owners. On screen from Friday 14th March, with a matinee on Wednesday 19th March at 3.00pm.

A former teen salsa champion, who was forced to quit dancing after losing his confidence in 1987, re-ignites his passion for dancing in Cuban Fury (15), when he develops a crush on his new boss and discovers that she too spends her nights on the salsa dance-floor! But will he be able to gain her attention with fire on his heels and snakes in his hips? Showing for four days only from Monday 24th March.

The month comes to a close with the nail-biting action-thriller Non-Stop (12A) which is on screen from Friday 28th March and stars Liam Neeson as an air marshal, who springs into action during a transatlantic flight after receiving a series of text messages that put his fellow passengers at risk unless the airline transfers $150 million into an off-shore account. Great edge-of-your-seat stuff!

Looking ahead, Easter brings a host of big screen entertainment to Leiston Film Theatre, including Mr. Peabody and Sherman 3D (U) and The Lego Movie 3D (U) (both also showing in 2D) - both of which form part of our money-saving 2-for1 Easter movie offer. Please see next month's Film Theatre news for full details, find us on Facebook and Twitter.

We look forward to welcoming you to the Leiston Film Theatre in the coming weeks.
