Studio plans get the green light

An ambitious plan to improve the facilities at one of the countries prestigious independent cinemas has taken a substantial step forward, following the backing of Leiston-cum-Sizewell Town Council.

At their meeting held on Tuesday 2nd July, Council members voted in favour of proceeding to tender on their management’s plans to improve the 99 year old venue by introducing a multi functional studio at the rear of the building.

It is intended to use the first floor extension as vital additional dressing room facilities, to enable more community groups, schools and organisations to use the building for their productions. The space could also be hired privately for functions, meetings, classes and exhibitions.

Once tenders are received, Councillors will then decide on the various funding options available for the project, which includes the potential sale of derelict ground in Central Road. If approved, building works will commence in February 2014, with an anticipated summer opening date, to enable the new space to be utilized as part of the venues centenary celebrations in 2014.

Film Theatre manager Wayne Burns is very pleased with this recent decision. “The success of this proposal provides the ideal project to mark the Film Theatre’s 100th anniversary next year. There were many celebratory events balanced on this decision and we can now look forward to a magnificent year to commemorate what is a remarkable achievement.” he said.

The venue has already received numerous enquiries concerning the use of the new multi functional studio as a gallery in the summer of 2014 and Film Theatre management are very interested to hear from anyone who would like to be considered for a seasonal programme of exhibitions.
